Multiple Teams · Varsity Softball Season Preview

Story by Student Journalists Ashlyn Drew and Dayton Carlson

Casteel softball has finished tryouts and are beginning practices in preparation for another remarkable season. With a similar team roster to last year, the team is expected to reach many notable accomplishments. Casteel’s team rankings are one thing, but their stats in comparison to national averages are outstanding.

During the 2020 spring season, Casteel’s softball team was ranked 2nd in the 5A San Tan Region. They have a 4-1 record overall, and a 2-0 record in their region. They were recorded as having 3 wins and 4 losses overall, but were forced to end the season significantly earlier than planned due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The majority of their statistics from last season are higher than the national average (excluding stolen bases), with a .384 batting average, .482 on base percentage, 6 total home runs, an 8.00 earned run average, and a .930 fielding percentage.

Many of the same players are returning to the team this year, for the 2021 spring season. All returning players are seniors and sophomores, with four new players on the roster. Seniors to highlight are Jenna Kobernick, Chloe Kienholz, Emma Abbott, Morgan Norris, and Melia Hecht. New players on the team are two freshman, a sophomore, and a junior.

This season, the team is scheduled to play 18 games, beginning March 16th and finishing regular games on May 3rd. Eight of these games are home games. Games typically start at 3:45, but can be later in the evening, depending on location and opponents. Spectator limitations vary depending on the location of the game. The team’s biggest competition this year has been the Gilbert Tigers and the Millennium Tigers. They recently lost a tight contest to Millenium 5-6, but feel they didn’t play their best game. However, they have set goals this year that, if met, will beat these teams come playoffs.

This season is looking very promising for Casteel’s softball team. With a strong team, remarkable coaches, and a solid work ethic, Casteel softball is destined for victory this spring. Be sure to support them in person or virtually, on the Casteel Athletics page or through
